Ondřejov Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Ondřejov, Czech Republic
Ondřejov Observatory is an astronomical facility in the Central Bohemian Region situated at 500 meters elevation with multiple research facilities and telescopes, including the country's largest optical instrument. The site features exhibition spaces displaying astronomical equipment and instruments.
Josef Jan Frič founded the observatory in 1898 as a private facility and donated it to the Czechoslovak state in 1928 to mark the nation's tenth independence anniversary. This donation transformed it into a major scientific institution for the entire country.
The Art Nouveau buildings house research areas where scientists study the Sun, stars, and our galaxy's structure. Visitors can see how these spaces are used for daily research work.
The site is located roughly 35 kilometers southeast of Prague and is equipped with visitor accommodations and a cafeteria. The grounds also feature exhibition areas where you can view the telescopes and other instruments up close.
Between 1997 and 2008, astronomers at this observatory identified 712 asteroids officially recognized by the Minor Planet Center. This substantial discovery record made it a significant center for modern asteroid research.
