Old Jewish Cemetery, Jewish cemetery in Josefov, Prague, Czech Republic
The cemetery contains over 12,000 weathered gravestones placed closely together, with Hebrew inscriptions and decorative symbols covering the stone surfaces.
Established in 1439, the cemetery remained active for burials until 1787 when authorities prohibited interments within Prague city boundaries for health reasons.
The gravestones display traditional Jewish symbols such as lions, grapes, and stars, representing the names, professions, and characteristics of those buried beneath.
The Jewish Museum in Prague manages guided tours through the cemetery grounds, with the entrance located at Siroka Street number 3.
Due to limited space and religious restrictions against moving graves, bodies were buried in layers up to twelve deep, creating an elevated ground surface.
