Buchlovice Castle, Baroque château in Buchlovice, Czech Republic
Buchlovice Castle is a baroque residence in central Bohemia, designed after Italian villa models and divided into two main sections. The lower building served ceremonial and reception purposes, while the upper section contained the living quarters for daily use.
Jan Dětřich of Petřwald commissioned this residence between 1707 and 1738 because the older Buchlov Castle no longer met the needs of contemporary aristocratic life. Its completion marked a shift in how nobility in this region lived and expressed their status.
The interiors feature elaborate stucco work and painted ceilings that reveal how the nobility lived in past times. Walking through these rooms shows you the comforts and tastes that shaped daily life in this household.
The castle is open to visitors year-round and offers guided tours through the state rooms along with access to the surrounding park and gardens. Plan to spend enough time to explore both the interior rooms and the outdoor grounds thoroughly.
In September 1908, diplomatic talks between Austria-Hungary and Russia took place here, resulting in the Buchlau Agreement about Bosnia-Herzegovina. This meeting was a pivotal moment in European diplomacy just before the First World War.
