Lidice, Memorial site in Kladno District, Czech Republic.
Lidice is a municipality in Kladno District, Czech Republic, located about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northwest of Prague on the Prague Plateau. The site consists of a museum, a memorial area with sculptures and remnants of the original settlement, and extensive green spaces including rose gardens.
The original village was completely destroyed on June 10, 1942, by German forces who executed 172 men and deported women and children to concentration camps. After the war ended, a new settlement was built on a nearby site while the remains of the old village were transformed into a memorial.
The name of this place has become a global symbol of civilian suffering during wartime. School groups and youth delegations from across Europe regularly visit the memorial to learn about the events and engage with themes of peace and reconciliation.
Access to the grounds is possible year-round, with adequate pathways suitable for wheelchair users. Guided tours can be arranged in advance and are offered in several languages, while a visit typically takes between two and three hours.
The memorial hosts an international children's art exhibition featuring works by young artists from around the world, held regularly for decades. The contributions come from over 70 countries and present perspectives on themes such as hope and coexistence.
