Teplá Abbey, Premonstratensian monastery in Teplá, Czech Republic
Teplá Abbey is a Premonstratensian monastery featuring a Romanesque three-nave Annunciation Church with Gothic touches, located at 660 meters elevation. The neo-Baroque library and museum buildings, constructed in the early 1900s, house printed works and manuscripts.
Founded in 1193 by Czech nobleman Hroznata, the monastery received its first monks from Prague's Strahov Abbey. The site became an important center for the Premonstratensian order in the region over the following centuries.
The library and museum here reflect monastic scholarship, housing collections of prints and manuscripts accumulated over centuries. You can sense the place's role as a center of learning when walking through these rooms.
The monastery welcomes visitors year-round through guided tours and is reachable by direct train from Mariánské Lázně or by car within 20 minutes. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended since the grounds slope gently and paths can be uneven in places.
The founder Hroznata, beatified in 1897, lies in a sarcophagus beneath the floor before the main altar. This hidden tomb connects the monastery's living history with its spiritual importance today.
