Mnichovo Hradiště Castle

Mnichovo Hradiště Castle is a Baroque complex located beside the Jizera River with stables, a riding school, carriage house, and salla terrena forming a complete ensemble. All these structures together create the picture of how a noble household operated and maintained itself.

The site began as a Renaissance fortress but was rebuilt in 1606 by Václav Budovec. The Valdštejn family later acquired it and transformed it into the Baroque château that stands today.

The castle contains a notable collection of Dutch paintings displayed throughout its rooms, reflecting how nobility expressed their taste and refinement. These works remain part of the interior decoration just as they were centuries ago.

The castle opens to visitors throughout the year with guided tours available through the preserved rooms and interiors. Allow time to explore the 18th-century theatre, which retains its original furnishings and equipment.

In 1833, the rulers of Austria, Russia, and Prussia met here for discussions about the Holy Alliance and European affairs. This diplomatic gathering temporarily elevated the castle to a centre of European politics.
