Hamrštejn, Gothic castle ruins in Machnín, Czech Republic.
Hamrštejn is a castle ruin in Machnín with Gothic architecture, its remains comprising two towers and sections of outer wall. The structures sit on a ridge overlooking the Lusatian Neisse river valley.
The castle was built around 1350 by the Lords of Bieberstein to protect trade routes toward Zittau. In 1433 it was captured by Hussite forces.
The ruins display Gothic building forms that were common in northern Bohemian fortifications. Visitors can observe the stonework typical of medieval castles in this region.
The ruin is reachable by train to Machnín hrad station or via the Odra-Neisse cycle path number 20. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain is uneven and partly steep.
Next to the castle stands a hand-operated cable ferry across the Lusatian Neisse, one of only eight still working systems of this kind. It connects nearby villages in a traditional way.
