Znojmo Town Hall Tower, Gothic tower in Znojmo, Czech Republic.
The Znojmo Town Hall Tower is a Gothic structure with two observation galleries and fine stone carvings distributed across its slender facade. The construction combines functional design with decorative elements typical of medieval civic architecture.
A local stonemason called Nicholas of Edelspitz built the structure between 1445 and 1448 under commission from Znojmo's municipal council. It arose during a period of significant economic growth in the city and was designed to reflect its prosperity.
The tower displays medieval craftsmanship through its detailed stone carvings that visitors encounter while climbing. These details reflect a period when Znojmo was a prosperous trading city that expressed its importance through such structures.
Visitors can climb to the two galleries for views across the city and the surrounding South Moravian region. The climb is manageable for people with normal fitness, though the narrow staircase requires some persistence.
During World War II, a Soviet bomb struck its roof but bounced off, instead damaging the old town hall building below. This accident left the tower as an unintended survivor of the war in the city.
