Bismarckova rozhledna, Observation tower in Pomezí nad Ohří, Czech Republic
Bismarckturm is an observation tower made of red brick with a square base, rising 28 meters high and offering two viewing platforms at different heights. The foundation measures approximately 14 meters on each side, allowing visitors to see the landscape from varied vantage points.
Construction began in spring 1915 under architect Hermann Hauke's direction but faced delays from World War I, taking about two years to complete. The tower emerged from a broader European trend of commemorating the German leader through monumental architecture during this period.
The tower is part of a network of monuments built across Europe to honor Otto von Bismarck, the first Chancellor of unified Germany. Visitors can still see today the importance given to this historical figure in the architecture and memory of the region.
The tower is open from April to October and normally accessible during most daylight hours. Visitors should know that reaching each viewing platform requires climbing internal stairs and the tower offers views across the surrounding landscape.
The tower served as a military observation point for the Wehrmacht in 1944 during World War II. A planned demolition in 1945 was prevented at the last moment, allowing the structure to survive and stand today.
