Brno University of Technology, university
Brno University of Technology is a research institution in Brno with eight faculties covering engineering, natural sciences, architecture, information technology, arts, and business. The campus features modern laboratories and experimental spaces where students gain hands-on experience, large sports facilities including a certified running track, and on-campus housing options. Students can choose from over 55 degree programs, with many offered in English to accommodate international learners.
Founded in 1899 as a school for civil engineering, the institution expanded through the early 1900s to include mechanical and electrical engineering, then architecture and other fields. After being forced to close during Nazi occupation in World War II, it reopened in 1945 and underwent reorganization during the Cold War era. The 1990s brought further expansion, adding chemistry and arts programs to its technical foundation.
The university's name derives from Czech tradition for technical education, and its motto "Sapere aude" (Have the courage to be wise) shapes a community where students and researchers collaborate openly. Walking through campus, you see people working together on robotics, environmental solutions, and digital protection projects, reflecting a culture of practical problem-solving and shared learning.
The campus is located primarily near Palacký Hill in the Královo Pole neighborhood, with additional sites in the city center and in Zlín. Student housing is affordable and available on campus with fast internet access, and the grounds feature multiple cafeterias, pizzerias, cafes, and snack bars where you can order online and pay with a student card. Free sports activities are available for all students throughout the year.
Researchers at the institution work on giving plastic waste a second or third life, turning environmental challenges into practical solutions in real time. Additionally, the campus has produced notable inventors and artists, including winners of the Jindřích Chalupecký Award, demonstrating that innovation is fostered equally in both technical and creative fields.
