Great Strahov Stadium, Monumental stadium in Strahov, Czech Republic.
Great Strahov Stadium is a functionalist structure in Prague's Břevnov district that ranks among the world's largest sports facilities. The central playing field covers an area that could hold nine football pitches, surrounded by long concrete grandstands that rise in terraces along the slopes of Petřín Hill.
Architect Alois Dryák designed the facility in 1926 as an open playing field for mass gymnastics and national events. The concrete grandstands were added in 1932 to accommodate the growing number of visitors at Sokol gatherings.
The grounds hosted large gatherings of the Sokol movement, a gymnastics organization with deep Czech roots. During these events, tens of thousands of gymnasts in matching uniforms gathered for choreographed mass displays that expressed both physical strength and community spirit.
Visitors can reach the site by taking the Petřín funicular or tram lines 22, 23, and 25 to Malovanka stop. From there, a gentle uphill walk through residential streets leads to the main entrance in about ten minutes.
The playing field measures over 63,000 square meters, exceeding most sports facilities worldwide in sheer size. Today the complex stands largely unused, its vast concrete surfaces occasionally serving as a backdrop for concerts and special events.
