Dívčí kámen, Medieval castle ruins near Holubov, Czech Republic
Burgruine Maidstein is a medieval castle ruin positioned on a rocky hilltop overlooking the Vltava River between České Budějovice and Český Krumlov in South Bohemia. The site displays stone foundations, walls, and structural remains that show the layout of this former fortified stronghold.
The fortress was founded in 1349 by the Rožmberk family under King Charles IV and served to control the river valley. Over the following centuries it was gradually abandoned and deteriorated into the ruins seen today.
The fortress served as a key residence for the Rožmberk family and held importance for the surrounding region. Today visitors can trace the family's presence through the building layout and architectural details that speak of their local influence.
The ruin is reachable by train to Třísov station or by parking in Holubov and following marked hiking trails to the site. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the paths are hilly and sometimes uneven.
At the foot of the castle walls, visitors can use a designated fireplace to prepare and cook traditional local dishes as part of their visit. This hands-on activity offers a memorable experience beyond the typical ruins exploration.
