Souš Reservoir, reservoir on the Černá Desná in Desná
Souš Reservoir is a large body of water in Desná surrounded by Czech mountain landscape and forested hills. Today it functions as a drinking water source for the towns of Jablonec nad Nisou and Tanvald, with the dam structure clearly visible from nearby trails.
The dam was built alongside a neighboring dam called Bílá Desná, but early cracks in its walls forced it to be drained for repairs. The water was restored between 1925 and 1927 after reconstruction work was completed.
The reservoir is also called the Černá Desná Dam, a name reflecting its connection to the stream that feeds it. Local residents recognize it as an important landmark in their mountain community.
You can explore the area on foot through gentle trails suitable for most visitors, making it a good spot for a leisurely walk or day hike. Keep in mind that this is a drinking water source, so follow posted signs to stay in permitted areas and avoid interfering with operations.
After World War II, a recreation center was briefly built on the site as locals came to enjoy the water and surroundings. This shift reflects how the location has evolved from a leisure destination to primarily serving as a drinking water supply today.
