Hořovice Castle

Hořovice Castle comprises two distinct sections: the medieval castle from the 14th century and the newer portion featuring refined neoclassical design elements. The newer section reflects substantial reconstruction work that reshaped its appearance in the 19th century.

The original structure emerged as a fortress in the 14th century within the region. Its present form was shaped by extensive reworking during the 19th century, overseen by Frederick William who commissioned an architect trained in neoclassical design.

The courtyard features sculptures by Matthias Braun that remain on display today. These works shape how the space looks and invite visitors to encounter them while walking through.

The newer castle section is open to visitors through organized tours that provide access to its rooms. The older fortress portion houses a library and museum that are also available for visitors to explore.

From 1867 to 1945 this served as the residence of the Princes of Hanau, who dwelt here across several generations. This period left its mark on the location and remains part of regional memory.
