Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area, Protected landscape area in Mělník District, Czech Republic.
This protected landscape area in northern Bohemia encompasses sandstone cliffs, deep valleys, forests, and meadows across distinct terrain. Water and time carved the rock into dramatic gorges and ridges, creating a maze of paths that visitors follow through varying elevations and woodland zones.
The area received protected status in 1976 to safeguard its sandstone landscape and natural systems. Before this designation, the region was home to German-speaking communities who left in 1945, marking a significant shift in settlement patterns.
The region takes its name from the medieval castle and honors Czech Romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha, whose verses captured the landscape's character. His literary influence remains visible in how locals and visitors experience and describe the valleys and woodlands today.
The area is accessible from multiple entry points with clearly marked hiking trails connecting major formations and viewpoints. Spring and autumn offer ideal conditions for visiting, when trails are drier and vegetation does not obstruct views through the valleys.
The landscape exhibits a temperature inversion pattern where higher elevations stay warmer year-round than lower valleys. This surprising phenomenon occurs because the steep gorges trap cooler air below while warmer air remains trapped at higher points.
