Kadaň Castle, Medieval castle in Kadaň, Czech Republic
Kadaň Castle is a four-wing fortified complex in Kadaň, Czech Republic, built in the Gothic style and positioned above the Ohře river. The complex consists of several stone buildings arranged around a central courtyard, and parts of it are now open to the public.
The castle dates to the 13th century, when it was built as a royal stronghold by the Přemyslid dynasty to control the Kadaň region. In the 18th century, under Maria Theresa, it was converted into military quarters, which brought major changes to its layout.
The eastern wing of the castle now houses a public library that locals visit on a regular basis. The Josef Liesler Gallery, located in the same section, shows rotating exhibitions of local and regional art.
The castle sits in the center of Kadaň and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the town. Since different sections have separate access and opening times, it is worth checking in advance which parts are open before planning a visit.
Although the castle was built as a defensive structure, it was never the site of a notable military siege. Instead, it was used almost continuously for administrative and civil purposes across the centuries.
