Košumberk Castle, Gothic castle ruin in Košumberk, Czech Republic.
Košumberk Castle is a Gothic ruin in Bohemia, Czech Republic, set on a hill in the village of the same name. The site consists of heavy stone walls, several towers, and fortified walkways that divide the grounds into distinct areas.
The castle was founded in the early 14th century and passed through the hands of several noble families who used it as a residence and seat of power. From the 17th century onward it fell into gradual disuse, which led to its current state.
The castle gives its name to the small village that grew up around it, and locals still feel a strong connection to the ruins on the hill above them. Visitors can walk along the remaining walls and get close to the stonework, which shows the typical building style of medieval Bohemia.
The ruins are open throughout the year, and paths lead visitors through the main surviving parts of the old fortification. Solid footwear is a good idea, as some sections have uneven stone surfaces and short steep stretches.
Although the castle was neglected for centuries, it was never fully dismantled, so some of its walls still stand to a good height. This means visitors can walk through spaces that are still clearly readable as rooms and passages rather than shapeless piles of stone.
