Kumburk

Kumburk is a castle ruin perched on a hilltop near Syřenov with stone walls and towers constructed over several centuries. The medieval structure displays Gothic defensive elements that were expanded and modified throughout its occupation.

The Vartemberk noble family founded the castle in the early 14th century, initially calling it Goldenberk. Over the following centuries, ownership changed several times and the structure was repeatedly modified to adapt to new needs.

The castle remains represent an important example of Gothic military architecture in the Czech Republic, leading to its designation as a national cultural monument.

The ruin can be reached from Syřenov via marked hiking trails or from the towns of Nová Paka and Stará Paka. Plan for uneven ground and steep paths when visiting, so sturdy footwear is essential for exploring the site safely.

The northeastern section contains a 15th-century fortification system specifically designed to withstand cannon fire. This feature shows how defensive strategies rapidly adapted when artillery became a serious military threat.
