Pařez Castle

Pařez Castle is a Gothic fortress built atop a sandstone outcrop within dense forest, featuring chambers carved directly into the rock and connected by stone staircases. The structure merges hewn rooms with natural rock formations to create a unified defensive work.

The fortress was built in the 14th century as a defensive stronghold and later served as a hideout for bandits who exploited its elevated position for surveillance. The structure demonstrates medieval occupation of this forested region.

The castle reflects medieval defense traditions of the region, showing how people adapted their building methods to work with natural rock formations. This approach shaped local architecture for centuries and remains visible in the surrounding landscape.

The ruins are accessible via a marked trail from the parking area near the pond, following red tourist signs toward Mladějov. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended, as the path goes through wooded terrain and the ascent to the rock is steep.

The site gained notoriety in medieval times as a hideout for bandits who took advantage of its secluded location and natural rock fortification. This outlaw past adds a layer of intrigue beyond the architectural interest of the ruins.
