Perštejn Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Perštejn, Czech Republic

Perštejn Castle is a medieval fortress built on a high rock formation in the Ore Mountains region. The structure features a five-story tower and multiple defensive buildings arranged across the surrounding landscape.

The Lords of Medlov built this Gothic fortress between 1270 and 1285, later adopting the name Persztejn from the German term Bärenstein. Over subsequent centuries, the castle reflected shifting power dynamics among Bohemian noble families and regional conflicts.

The castle's name derives from the German term Bärenstein, reflecting medieval connections between Bohemian and German-speaking regions. This linguistic heritage remains visible in local traditions and how the site is remembered by nearby communities.

Access to the ruins is via marked hiking trails from the village of Persztejn in the Ore Mountains region. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the terrain includes uneven ground and steep climbing sections.

The fortress incorporates natural rock formations into its defensive system, with steep cliffs serving as barriers on three sides. This use of landscape was a practical strategy in castle construction, reducing the need for additional protective structures.
