Burg Zbiroh

Burg Zbiroh is a Gothic castle that rises on a rock formation above the Jizera River, consisting of multiple stone walls and chambers carved directly into the rock face. The remains spread across several levels and still show traces of stairs, water cisterns, and defensive walls.

The castle was built in the early Gothic period of the 14th century and served as a fortress for the nobility until it was captured in the late 14th century. After this point, it gradually lost importance and eventually fell into decline over the following decades.

The ruins show medieval living quarters and defensive structures carved into the rock, reflecting how inhabitants organized their daily lives within these tight spaces. You can see how people gathered water and prepared their defenses against threats.

Hiking to the castle passes through wooded landscape and offers different routes depending on how close you want to get to the top and the views. Sturdy footwear and time to explore the internal stairs and carved chambers are important.

The castle became a hideout for armed bandits for several decades before it was destroyed and vanished from records. This dark chapter gives it a dual story as a fortress that served both noble and outlaw purposes.
