Děčínský Sněžník, Mountain summit in Jílové municipality, Czech Republic
Hoher Schneeberg is the highest summit in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, sitting at 723 meters (2,372 ft) on the Czech side of the border with Germany, near the town of Jílové. The top is covered in forest and sandstone rock formations, with a Neo-Gothic tower marking the highest point.
Emperor Joseph II climbed the summit in 1779, making it one of the earliest recorded ascents of the peak. Decades later, the observation tower was built in 1864, turning the mountain into a regular destination for visitors from both sides of the border.
The Neo-Gothic observation tower designed by Karl Moritz Haenel in 1864 still stands at the top and gives the summit a recognizable silhouette. Hikers from both the Czech and German sides of the border regularly meet here, making it a natural cross-border gathering point.
The summit can be reached from Jílové on the Czech side or from the German town of Rosenthal-Bielatal via well-marked trails, including the E3 European walking route. The paths are manageable for most hikers but solid footwear is a good idea given the rocky terrain.
On a clear day, the tower's viewing platform offers a line of sight all the way to Dresden, even though the city sits roughly 25 miles (40 km) away. The tower is also one of the few surviving Neo-Gothic observation towers of its kind still open to the public in this part of central Europe.
