Újezd Reservoir, lake in Vrskmaň, Ústí nad Labem Region, Czech Republic
Újezd Reservoir is a large water storage basin built to manage water flow and supply to the region. The water surface is typically calm and clear, with open areas featuring walking and cycling paths around the perimeter.
The reservoir was built starting in 1978 and completed in the early 1980s to manage water supply and control flooding. Its construction submerged several small settlements in the area, including the historic village of Újezd, which was inhabited until 1980.
The name Újezd comes from old Czech and refers to land marked out by noblemen. The village that once stood here was a farming community with crafts and small workshops, now submerged beneath the reservoir's surface.
The reservoir features walking and cycling paths and is less crowded on weekdays, making it a quiet spot to visit. Access is straightforward, and the dam offers good views of the surrounding mountains and the water surface.
Beneath this water lies not only a submerged village but also a medieval fortress that once stood on an island as part of the area's defense system. Visitors today can contemplate these lost structures while viewing the still surface.
