Vartenberk Castle, Gothic and Renaissance château in Stráž pod Ralskem, Czech Republic.

Vartenberk Castle stands on Zámecký vrch (352 m) above the Ploučnice valley northeast of Stráž pod Ralskem. The Renaissance château was built on the masonry of a Gothic castle, whose elongated hilltop keep once rose to the north above the forecourt. A moat with a drawbridge and a round bastion under the west corner belonged to the medieval fortification.

The castle was founded in 1281 and served as a defensive stronghold during medieval times in the region. In the centuries that followed, it received Renaissance modifications that changed its appearance and function.

The castle holds the status of a Czech cultural monument, showing how the region preserves its architectural past. Visitors can observe how medieval and Renaissance elements stand side by side in its structure.

The castle is currently undergoing restoration, so some areas may not be accessible to visitors. Guided tours are available and offer information about the site's architecture and history.
