Lužná u Rakovníka Railway Museum, Railway museum in Lužná, Czech Republic
The Lužná u Rakovníka Railway Museum is an open-air and indoor museum in Central Bohemia, housed within a historic railway depot. The site features a large roundhouse, a turntable, and open tracks where steam locomotives, diesel engines, and passenger cars from different periods are displayed.
The depot at Lužná was built in the late 19th century and served for decades as an active maintenance and storage point for locomotives on the Rakovník line. When regular operations wound down, it was gradually turned into a museum to keep the country's railway history from disappearing.
The museum occupies a working depot that still looks much as it did during its active years, with a turntable, engine shed, and repair shops all in place. Visitors can walk among the vehicles and get a real sense of how railway workers went about their daily routines.
The museum is open from April through October, with special events on weekends when some locomotives are put into steam. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, since paths cross active tracks and uneven ground throughout the site.
Among the vehicles on display is a personal salon car that once belonged to President Masaryk, still fitted with its original interior. Stepping inside gives a direct sense of what official travel looked like in the early 20th century.
