Jezerní slať, Natural monument in Šumava National Park, Czech Republic
Jezerní slať is a peat bog landscape in Šumava National Park located between two settlements in South Bohemia. The terrain spans low-lying wetlands and mixed plant communities across a 208-hectare area at elevations between 1057 and 1075 meters.
The Czech government designated this wetland as a protected natural monument in 1933 to preserve its bog ecosystems. This protection enabled researchers to study the area's unique biodiversity and wetland processes.
The site represents the natural heritage of South Bohemia through educational programs that teach visitors about wetland conservation and regional ecological systems.
A wooden observation platform stands at the end of a marked trail, offering views across the wetland from an elevated vantage point. This spot lets visitors survey the peat bog landscape and the forested surroundings in one view.
The site experiences some of the lowest temperatures in the Czech Republic, creating a specialized habitat for cold-adapted species. Visitors may encounter the Northern birch mouse and Viviparous lizard, which thrive only in these harsh conditions.
