Líčkov Castle, Baroque château in Líčkov, Czech Republic

Líčkov Castle stands on a rocky spur above the village of Líčkov in the Louny district, on the site of a medieval fortress whose partly preserved round bergfrit tower survives. Bohuslav Hrobčický had the old castle rebuilt as a chateau around 1596 in late Renaissance style; its present appearance with Rococo elements dates from after 1765, when Josef Vonibald of Eben remodelled it. Inside are historic interiors with wall paintings and original Rococo decoration, the Oskar Brázda painting gallery, and a Chapel of St Anne from the second half of the 18th century with Baroque furnishings.

A medieval fortress on the site is first documented in 1342 as property of the Church of All Saints at Prague Castle; Václav Vlček had it rebuilt after 1453. Bohuslav Hrobčický of Hrobčice converted the Gothic castle into a late-Renaissance chateau around 1596. Its present appearance dates from after 1765, when Josef Vonibald of Eben remodelled it with Baroque and Rococo elements.

The castle houses the Oskar Brázda painting gallery; the painter lived and worked here until the estate was confiscated in 1948. A chapel of St Anne from the second half of the 18th century, with Baroque furnishings, forms part of the interiors.

The castle is not open to the public: after a few years of guided tours it was closed during protracted ownership disputes, and in December 2024 it passed to Václav Kozlovský, great-nephew of the painter's widow Marie Brázdová. Access to the grounds and the Oskar Brázda gallery should be confirmed before travelling. The site lies above the village of Líčkov in the Louny district, reachable from Louny by car.

The castle has been closed to the public since long-running ownership disputes followed its restitution to the painter's heir in 1992. Inside, the Oskar Brázda picture gallery and a Chapel of St Anne from the second half of the 18th century with Baroque furnishings are preserved.
