Frýdlant Castle, Renaissance château in Frýdlant, Czech Republic
Frýdlant Castle rises on a basalt rock formation and combines Gothic fortress elements with Renaissance and Baroque architectural features. The interior contains about 65 furnished rooms that display different building styles and periods.
Albrecht von Wallenstein acquired the castle in 1622 and made it the center of his duchy during the Thirty Years War. Under his rule, the building received many of its present architectural features.
The castle displays hunting weapons, family portraits, and furniture from different periods, offering insight into how its former residents lived. These collections reflect the interests and tastes of the noble families who called this place home.
Visits are only by guided tour and last about two hours, something to keep in mind when planning your day. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes, as the building has many stairs and steps.
The castle opened to visitors in 1801 and was the first public castle museum in Central Europe. This early decision made it a model for many other castles in the region.
