Great Synagogue, Synagogue in Plzeň, Czech Republic
The Great Synagogue in Plzeň is a religious building with two 45-meter towers and an interior layout of three naves. The walls feature floral decoration paintings, and a pipe organ from 1890 remains inside the building.
The building was constructed between 1888 and 1892, representing the craftsmanship of its era. During World War II, it functioned as a furniture storage facility, which ironically prevented its destruction during Nazi occupation.
The synagogue serves as a place for religious worship and musical performances, bringing together visitors from different backgrounds. Its excellent acoustics make it a preferred venue for concerts and other cultural events.
The synagogue is open from Sunday to Thursday and welcomes visitors to experience the religious space. Guided tours provide access to additional areas including the rabbinical house and tower sections.
The building ranks as the largest synagogue in Czech Republic and among the five largest in the world. This scale demonstrates the significance of the Jewish community that once thrived in the city.
