Benešov nad Ploučnicí Castle, Renaissance castle complex in Benešov nad Ploučnicí, Czech Republic
Benešov nad Ploučnicí Castle comprises two sections: the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle with distinct architectural features. Both parts display Late Gothic and Saxon Renaissance styles through their elaborate facades and interior layouts.
The Von Salhausen family from Meissen commissioned the fortress in the early 16th century and transformed it into a Renaissance residence. After the Bohemian Revolt of 1621, the castle ceased to serve as a noble residence.
The rooms display furniture, porcelain, weapons, and paintings that show how nobles lived between the 16th and 17th centuries. Walking through these spaces gives a sense of daily life among the wealthy families who once occupied the castle.
The castle is open to visitors from March through October with guided tours available in multiple languages. Both the Upper and Lower sections have distinct pathways that can be explored separately.
The castle structures have remained largely unchanged since the 17th century because no noble family took residence there afterward. This architectural stasis preserves the Renaissance design in its original form.
