Ctěnice Castle, Baroque castle and museum in Vinoř, Czech Republic
Ctěnice Castle is a two-story baroque building with white walls and an arcaded courtyard, located in the village of Ctěnice in the Vinoř district near Prague. It sits within a garden and now operates as a museum dedicated to Czech history.
The castle was first mentioned in 1273 as property of Strahov Monastery in Prague, and ownership changed several times over the following centuries. The Hrzán family carried out major works in the 17th century that gave the building its current baroque form.
The exhibitions inside display everyday objects and furniture from the time of Bohemian nobility, giving a clear picture of what life on a country estate once looked like. The preserved interior rooms let visitors experience the domestic side of past centuries firsthand.
The castle is reachable by regular bus from Prague and works well as a day trip from the city. Guided tours are available on site, so it is worth checking opening times before you go.
Restoration work uncovered layers of historical frescoes inside the walls, each belonging to a different construction phase stretching from medieval times onward. This means parts of the building carry visible traces of every major change made over the centuries, stacked one on top of the other.
