Ploskovice Castle, Baroque castle in Ploskovice, Czech Republic
Ploskovice Castle is a Baroque structure showing three stories from the north and four from the south, with its facades framing formal gardens and fountains. An underground cave system beneath the grounds supplies water to the fountains and decorative pools.
Construction took place between 1720 and 1725 at the request of Grand Duchess Anna Maria Francesca of Tuscany, who wanted a summer residence in the countryside. This period marked the height of Baroque building in the Czech lands.
The rooms display paintings by Vaclav Vavřinec Reiner and stucco work by Tommaso Soldatti that shaped the look of Czech Baroque interiors. Walking through these spaces, you see how artists used decoration to show wealth and taste.
Visitors explore the interior through guided tours that cover the halls, formal gardens, and the underground cave system with its fountains. The tour requires walking through both above-ground rooms and underground passages, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for cooler temperatures in the caves.
The underground hydraulic system is an engineering feat from the 1700s that still powers fountains on the grounds today. This network of caves served both practical and decorative purposes, impressing guests with the sophistication of the construction.
