Castle in Kostelec nad Černými lesy

The castle in Kostelec nad Černými lesy is a Renaissance fortress with round and polygonal towers at each corner, connected by a stone bridge decorated with baroque vases that spans a deep ditch. The building displays a mix of defensive elements and refined living spaces that reflect its former life as a hunting lodge for nobility.

The structure evolved from a Gothic fortress to a Renaissance hunting lodge after a fire in 1549 under the direction of Italian architect Hans Tirol. This transformation reflected a shift from times of conflict to an era when castle owners adapted these sites for personal use.

The chapel inside the castle walls is used for wedding celebrations and connects to the main building through a decorated passage. These spaces show how the place became a location for family events and personal ceremonies over time.

The castle opens from June through September on weekends and can only be visited with a guide, which lasts about one hour. It is recommended to check current opening times in advance and wear comfortable shoes for walking through the historic rooms.

The castle is managed by the Czech Agricultural University, which operates a forest company inside and uses the income for building maintenance. This unusual arrangement shows how such monuments are preserved today through practical use.
