Nové Město nad Metují Castle

Nové Město nad Metují Castle is a structure combining Renaissance and Baroque styles, featuring ornate arcades, stucco-decorated halls, and mythological frescoes painted across multiple levels. The grounds include terraced gardens with stone sculptures, castle suite accommodations, and spaces for rotating exhibitions throughout the year.

The castle began in the 16th century and passed through several ownership changes involving the Pernštejn, Stubenberg, and Leslie families. In 1908 the Bartoň family took control and continues to preserve and operate it for visitors today.

The kitchen reflects an art-nouveau design that served President Masaryk during his visits, showcasing craftsmanship and details created by architect Dušan Jurkovič. The rooms throughout display period furnishings and decorative elements that show how residents lived during different eras.

Visitors can join guided tours through the interior, stay overnight in castle suites, and explore the terraced gardens at their own pace. It helps to check availability of tours in advance and learn which areas are accessible during different seasons.

The castle remains a private home of the Bartoň-Dobenín family, who carefully maintain it while opening it to the public. This blend of private residence and public access makes it a rare example of an inhabited national monument still in family hands.
