Nový hrad u Kunratic, Gothic castle ruin in Kunratický les, Czech Republic
Nový hrad u Kunratic is a castle ruin with foundation walls and a palace structure situated on a forested promontory within Kunratický forest. The remains reveal the layout of a medieval defensive stronghold surrounded by trees.
King Václav IV commissioned the construction of this castle in 1411, yet it lost importance after his death in 1419. By 1421, Prague citizens captured and burned the stronghold.
The ruins inspired writer Alois Jirásek, who wove this location into his historical fiction during the 19th century. The site merges nature with literary history in a quiet way.
The ruins are accessible year-round by following marked trails through the forest and entry is free. Wear comfortable shoes since the path goes through wooded terrain.
The ruin features an irregular pentagonal shape with three defensive walls and a moat system that protected the stronghold. This design was a practical solution for defense on a forested slope.
