Zbiroh, Art Nouveau railway station in Karez, Czech Republic
Zbiroh is a former railway station with Art Nouveau style features situated between Prague and Plzen at an elevation of 442 meters, displaying decorative architectural elements throughout. The building showcases the refined design language of this period across many details of its facade and interior spaces.
The building was constructed in 1910 and served as a transportation hub for regional passengers. Railway operations ceased in 2012, after which the structure received status as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
An Australian musician acquired the station in 2014 and transformed it into a space for international volunteers and creative projects. Visitors can observe how people from different backgrounds now gather here to work on artistic and community activities.
The building can be explored on foot and the surroundings offer good views of the region. The Borek bus station is located immediately next to the building, making it easy for visitors to arrive.
The restoration project regularly brings together volunteers from different countries who participate in maintenance work while learning about Czech railway heritage. This international collaboration creates a special quality to the place that goes beyond simple monument preservation.
