Church of the Holy Spirit in Old Town, Prague

The Church of the Holy Spirit is a Gothic parish church featuring a single nave, extended choir, and a rectangular tower on its north side. The interior layout reflects its medieval origins, while the roof displays later Baroque alterations added after fire damage.

The building rose as a Gothic parish church in medieval times and retained its Gothic flying buttresses through the centuries. A fire in 1689 destroyed the interior, prompting a Baroque-style roof reconstruction while the medieval outer walls remained intact.

The church stands directly beside the Spanish Synagogue and once marked a spatial boundary between Jewish and non-Jewish quarters in the city. Its location today speaks to this divided past and reflects how different religious communities lived as neighbors.

The location is easy to reach on foot from the Old Town Square and sits at the edge of the Jewish Quarter, making it a natural stop on a city tour. Regular services take place, but visitors should check opening times in advance and remain respectful and quiet if a service is underway.

The facade displays a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk carved by Ferdinand Maxmilian Brokoff, one of the country's leading Baroque sculptors. This artwork is one of many pieces by the master that shaped the city's historical character.
