Městské divadlo Znojmo, Historical theatre in Znojmo, Czech Republic
The Městské divadlo Znojmo is a theatre building in the southern Moravian city featuring a neo-baroque auditorium. The ceiling and walls are designed in white, red, and gold, creating an elegant setting for performances.
The theatre building opened on September 29, 1900, and became an important venue for performances in the region from the start. After damage from bombing in 1945, extensive restoration took place between 1992 and 2000.
The building carries the name of its founding association and serves today as a venue for local productions. Visitors can see how traditional Czech theatre culture continues to live and develop here.
The building now seats about 278 spectators, compared to the original 616 seats, which creates a more intimate experience. The smaller capacity allows for better acoustics and meets modern safety standards.
Before the current building, theatre performances in Znojmo took place outdoors, including Passion plays. The first indoor show dates back to 1548.
