Průrva Ploučnice

Průrva Ploučnice is an underground canal that directs the entire Ploučnice River through a 150-meter rock tunnel carved into the mountainside. The passage was cut through solid stone and demonstrates the technical skill applied to water engineering in centuries past.

Engineers built this water tunnel several centuries ago to supply a local hammer mill with steady water flow for its operations. The project reflects how people developed sophisticated methods to harness rivers and power their mills and workshops.

The site shows how local people engineered water systems to serve their needs and adapted the landscape for practical work. Today it stands as a protected monument that reflects the technical skills and determination of earlier generations.

The area is accessible via marked walking paths, and you can view the rock formation and water flow from several vantage points along the tunnel. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground can be uneven in places and the area near the water may be slippery.

The name Průrva refers to the river's sudden disappearance into darkness and its unexpected reappearance on the far side of the rock. This dramatic vanishing and return of the water makes the tunnel feel like a natural marvel that humans cleverly adapted for their own purposes.
