Invalidovna, Baroque veterans residence in Karlín, Czech Republic
Invalidovna is a single-story baroque building in Karlín with nine planned sections and a central courtyard. Decorative sculptures on the roof level give the facade a refined artistic appearance.
Construction began in 1731 through Count Petr Strozzi's will, establishing a foundation to care for wounded soldiers and military veterans. This founding made it an important site of welfare and social support in the city.
The building gained recognition when filmmaker Milos Forman selected it for shooting a major film in 1984. The structure reflects an intention to create a place of dignity and care for those who had served their country.
The site sits directly at Invalidovna metro station on line B, making it easily accessible by public transport. The building is currently undergoing extensive reconstruction and remains closed to visitors.
Original plans envisioned it functioning as a self-contained small town with shops, hospital facilities, and educational spaces for around 1,200 residents. This ambitious vision went far beyond a simple residence.
