Hluboká Castle, Gothic Revival castle in Hluboká nad Vltavou, Czech Republic
Hluboká Castle is a white fortress with multiple towers rising above an English-style park in South Bohemia. The building combines medieval foundations with Gothic Revival elements that were added during the 19th century.
The fortress was founded in the early 13th century and was owned by local noble families for several centuries. In the 19th century, the Schwarzenbergs took over the building and completely transformed its appearance with Gothic Revival work.
The rooms here display collections that belonged to the Schwarzenberg family, including tapestries, weapons, and furniture from different periods. These objects tell stories about how the nobility lived and connected with the rest of Europe.
The castle stands about 9 km north of České Budějovice, with the entrance set behind a formal garden. Guided tours lead through the state rooms and private apartments, and the former riding hall now holds the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery. The castle is state-owned and managed by the National Heritage Institute.
The castle's library has a coffered ceiling brought from the Schwarzenberg family's ancestral castle in Schwarzenberg. The neo-Gothic chapel holds an altar with a large late Gothic ark. In 2024 the castle drew around 187,000 visitors.
