New City Hall, City hall in Moravská Ostrava, Czech Republic.
The New City Hall is a modern administrative building in Moravská Ostrava distinguished by its 85.6-meter tower with a copper-clad steel structure. The structure consists of three wings surrounding a central rectangular courtyard.
The building was constructed between 1924 and 1929 according to designs by architects František Kolář and Jan Rubý. Its completion marked a turning point in the city's development following the establishment of Czechoslovakia.
The front entrance features a columned portico with sculptures by V. Mácha that depict important aspects of city life and community values. These artworks reflect what this building meant to the city and its residents.
The observation deck at 73 meters high offers views across Silesian and Moravian Ostrava, Přívoz, Mariánské Hory, Vítkovice, and the Beskydy Mountains. The climb to the viewing platform is most rewarding on clear days when the panoramic views stretch across the entire region.
The building houses one of the last functioning paternoster elevators in the city, a rare survivor from the early modernization era. The tower clock features faces measuring 350 centimeters in diameter, representing a remarkable technical achievement.
