Stará Boleslav

Stará Boleslav is a small settlement in Central Bohemia with a collection of religious buildings spanning different periods. The Basilica of Saint Wenceslaus displays Romanesque features, while the Church of the Assumption holds Gothic elements and important artistic treasures.

In the 10th century, Duke Boleslaus I transformed the settlement by constructing stone fortifications that made it a significant stronghold. A century later, the Collegiate Chapter of Saints Cosmas and Damian was founded and remains the oldest of its kind in Bohemia.

The Palladium relief in the Church of the Assumption displays intricately carved Gothic figures that have drawn pilgrims for centuries. The religious artworks here reflect the deep reverence the place has commanded across generations.
