Rubín Podbořany, Cultural monument and hillfort in Dolánky, Czech Republic
Rubín Podbořany is a hillfort and protected cultural monument in Dolánky, in the Czech Republic. A wooden observation tower stands at the top, and the earthworks of the old fortification are still partly visible along the hillside.
Before the 10th century, Celtic and then Slavic groups used this hilltop as a fortified settlement. Some historians suggest it may be the site known as Wogastisburg, mentioned in early medieval sources as the location of a notable clash.
The hill's name, Rubín, means ruby in Czech, and it may refer to the reddish soil found on the slopes. Locals visit the summit not only to enjoy the view but also to walk through the forest paths that wind around the ancient earthworks still visible today.
The hill is reachable on foot from the nearby town of Podbořany, with parking available near Pšov cemetery. The path to the summit runs through forest, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
From the wooden tower at the top, you can see the cooling towers of the Prunéřov and Tušimice power plants on the horizon. This view places thousands of years of human activity side by side in a single glance.
