Imperial funicular, Funicular railway in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.
The Imperial funicular is a cable railway in Karlovy Vary that uses an underground system to connect two areas of the spa town. The route runs beneath ground for approximately 127 meters while climbing a steep slope, giving passengers a sense of the terrain being traversed.
The system began operating in 1907 and initially served to transport construction materials for a nearby hotel. After the building work was completed, it was converted to passenger service in 1912 and has since served city visitors.
The funicular dates from the early 1900s and was among the first cable railways built in Karlovy Vary. Visitors today experience the engineering of that era while riding through the underground tunnel connecting the lower and upper parts of the spa town.
The ride is easily accessible and the cable cars can accommodate about 50 passengers per journey. Regular departures run throughout the day, and you can use a standard city transit pass for entry.
The cable system maintains a consistent speed throughout the entire journey despite the steep underground climb. The elevation gain within the tunnel is about 54 meters, which demonstrates the engineering achievement of this early installation.
