Olšany Cemetery, Public burial ground in Žižkov, Prague, Czech Republic
The grounds of Olšany Cemetery cover twelve separate sections spread across multiple acres, containing over 230,000 graves and six columbariums.
The cemetery opened in 1680 during a plague epidemic when Emperor Joseph II prohibited burials within Prague city limits for health concerns.
Many Czech cultural figures rest here, including Jan Palach, whose 1969 self-immolation became a symbol of resistance against Soviet occupation.
The cemetery maintains seasonal hours, opening at 8 AM year-round but closing at 7 PM in summer and 5 PM in winter months.
The site features numerous Art Nouveau monuments and includes specialized sections for Orthodox Christians, Muslims, and the largest Jewish cemetery in Czech Republic.

Prague contains numerous historical sites beyond the main tourist areas. The Vyšehrad fortress stands above the Vltava River with Gothic and Baroque architecture. The Vrtba Garden displays terraced landscaping from the 18th century. The Strahov Monastery holds medieval manuscripts in its libraries. Modern culture thrives at Kasárna Karlín, a former military base. Gardens like Wallenstein and Kinský offer green spaces with statues and ponds. Religious buildings include the modernist St. Wenceslas Church in Vršovice and the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn.
