Ostrava Zoo covers 100 hectares in the Stromovka area of Slezská Ostrava, making it the second largest zoo in the Czech Republic after Chomutov. Its grounds hold a bear enclosure, a chimpanzee island opened in 1968, aquarium halls from 1969 and 1974, and a hippo pavilion built in 1975.
The zoo's origin dates to 1948, when miners of the Zárubek and Alexander pits built a recreation park in Kunčičky; Bohumil Vítek brought the first roe deer, pheasants and peacocks. On 26 October 1951 the national committee approved the zoo, and in 1953 experts chose Stromovka in Slezská Ostrava as its new site. The first enclosure opened there was the bear run.
The zoo runs educational programs where visitors can learn about wildlife and nature through interactive exhibits and demonstrations. These activities help families understand how animals live and interact in different environments.
The best time to visit is in the morning when animals are more active and crowds are smaller. Comfortable shoes and plenty of time are important since the grounds are quite large.
The zoo has a special exhibit combining water and land animals that takes up a large area and surprises visitors with its scale. This display shows how different species coexist in their natural environments.
