Stará radnice, Baroque town hall in Moravská Ostrava, Czech Republic.
The Stara radnice is a town hall building with Baroque features at the southwestern corner of Masaryk Square in Moravska Ostrava. It features a tower and displays a blend of Baroque elements, Empire-style touches, and Neo-Renaissance details that developed over several centuries.
The first written mention of the town hall building dates to 1539. After a fire in 1556, the tower was rebuilt according to designs by B. Vlach.
The building carries the name Old Town Hall and displays different architectural styles on its facade that were shaped by various periods. You can clearly see how craftspeople and architects left their mark across generations.
The Stara radnice houses the Ostrava Museum and a tourist information center today, both helpful for visitors with questions. Guided tours and exhibitions offer insight into the building's history and architecture.
In 1829, lightning struck the tower, leading to debates about its demolition. Authorities chose reconstruction instead, preserving this architectural landmark.
