Saint Wenceslas Orthodox Cathedral, Orthodox Cathedral at Gorazdova Street, Brno, Czech Republic
Saint Wenceslas Orthodox Cathedral is a brick functionalist church building with a rectangular floor plan and a dome covered in gold leaf. It sits on the northwestern slope of Špilberk Hill, displaying the clean lines and simplicity of early 20th-century modern design.
The building was constructed between 1930 and 1931, designed by architect Petr Levický who donated his services to the Orthodox community without charge. This rapid completion allowed the community to establish their own place of worship in the city.
The interior features an iconostasis with red stone panels supporting eight green columns, decorated with religious paintings by artist Olga Dyachenko that still guide worship today. These images form the visual heart of prayer and devotion for the Orthodox congregation.
The cathedral is easily reached using public transport at the nearby stops Tvrdého or Obilní trh, served by tram line 4 and trolleybus lines 35, 38, and 39. Its location on Gorazdova Street with views toward the hill makes finding and visiting straightforward.
A memorial plaque on the facade honors Bishop Gorazd and two church elders who were executed in 1942 for sheltering those who assassinated a Nazi official. This remembrance marks the building's connection to one of the darkest chapters in local history.
