Church of the Holy Spirit and former hospital in Most, church in Most District of Ústí Nad Labem region
The Church of the Holy Spirit is a Gothic structure with pointed arches and ornate stone carvings that give it a tall, slender profile. Next to it stands the former hospital building from the 18th century, built in Baroque style with its characteristic rounded and decorated forms.
The original church burned down in 1515, leading to reconstruction starting in 1517 that lasted through the 1500s and 1600s, with repairs needed after another fire in 1578. In 1975, the building was moved 800 meters to its current location to protect it from mining activity and reopened in 1993.
The name refers to the Holy Spirit as the church's patron, reflecting its spiritual role in the community. People still gather here for prayer and local events, keeping the space active in the religious life of the town.
The site is easy to explore on foot, allowing you to view the stonework details and window shapes at leisure while imagining the building's past. A 2023 memorial nearby marks the church's original location and features gravel pathways and chestnut trees planted where the structure once stood.
The building was moved roughly 800 meters in 1975 as one of the heaviest structures ever relocated on wheels to protect it from mining, an achievement recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Small sections of the railway track used during this massive relocation remain visible today near the memorial at the original site.
